Malaysia – Land of Plenty & More

The DNA of the many of the healing modalities and traditions of peoples who have made Malaysia their home leads to the house of TCM and Ayurveda.
Through the millennia Malaysia has attracted waves of people in search of better lives. Its attraction has always been its strategic location that separates the Indian Ocean from the South China Sea. This strategic location makes her an ideal port of call on the super waterway for East-West trade. Before Man learned to conquer the oceans, migrants took the overland route to come to Peninsular Malaysia (now referred to as West Malaysia). First came the Negritos, the aboriginal people who are generally accepted as the earliest inhabitants of Malaysia. Later came the sea-faring Jakuns, the Proto-Malays. According to anthropologists the Malay race originally hailed from Yunnan, China. The Deutro-Malays came next. Made up of different peoples – Arabs, Chinese, Indian, Siamese – they merged with the inhabitants of the Indonesian archipelago and developed into what is generally regarded today as the Malay race. Malaysia is more than just a nation of Malays. Over the last two thousand years migrants came from all over to look for the literal pot of gold. Many stayed on to make this land their home.
In their quest for a better life, the ancestors of present-day Malaysians had left the healing cultures and traditions that they had brought from their respective homeland. These had served them well as they ventured across the seas and subsequently built new lives and sink their roots in their adopted country. Some of these have remained intact, unchanged. Other healing modalities that once were part of the local repertoire of healing rituals have evolved. Nevertheless traceable in them are distinct Ayurvedic and TCM influences. These such as those that you will see in the various spas and wellness retreats sprinkled all over Malaysia – East and West – are reflective of the rich cultural mix that is Malaysia’s.
